Aging in Place in the Wake of COVID-19

| July 08, 2020

Everyone ages and, as a result, they eventually need personal and medical care in a comfortable living environment. Seniors are tasked with deciding what their care will look like and where they want to wake up each morning. With COVID-19 wreaking havoc at nursing care facilities, some are facing the decision of staying at home rather than moving to an elder care facility.

Things to consider if you choose to age in place:

  • Rely on outside sources: Staying at home means caregivers will need to come from the outside and the thought of spreading the virus can be concerning. To stop the social spread of COVID-19, you should impose strict cleanliness rules at your home and continue to limit the number of people coming through the doors. Consider having disposable masks and antibacterial wipes at the door.
  • Keep your home safe: Home modifications may be required to provide solutions for a safer environment. Stability handles, ramps, and furniture modifications should all be looked at and typically an Occupational Therapist, with Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) certification, can provide a comprehensive evaluation. Don’t forget proper lighting in all areas as well as installing motion sensors is often an appreciated update.
  • Consider your indoor air quality: COVID-19 is thought to be spread through respiratory droplets when someone sneezes, coughs or talks, so it’s vital to keep your indoor air clean. Check your carbon monoxide detectors and make sure heating and air conditioning units are serviced and working properly. The use of HEPA filters will be greatly appreciated by anyone with allergies, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
